When the electric grid is under stress, having access to reliable electricity becomes more than a convenience. It becomes a matter of energy security.
Recent events are a reminder that our electric grid faces challenges from rising electricity demand, power plant maintenance, transmission limitations, and extreme weather. While utilities and grid operators work to keep electricity flowing, homeowners and businesses can take steps to reduce their dependence on the grid.
One of those steps is combining solar panels with battery storage.
Grid Reliability Is Becoming a Bigger Concern

The US Secretary of Energy issued an emergency order to mitigate blackout risks ahead of a period of elevated demand, a high rate of planned generator outages during the autumn maintenance season, and numerous planned transmission outages in October of 2026
On October 12, 2026, the U.S. Department of Energy announced an emergency order intended to reduce blackout risks in the Mid-Atlantic region. According to the Department of Energy, the order directed PJM Interconnection, the regional grid operator, to make additional generation resources available during a period of elevated electricity demand and multiple planned power plant and transmission outages.
The order also authorized the use of backup generation as a last resort to help maintain grid reliability.

Although this announcement focused on the Mid-Atlantic, it highlights a challenge that matters to electricity customers everywhere. Our homes and businesses depend on a complex power grid, and that system can come under pressure when demand is high or important equipment is unavailable.
Kansas and Missouri property owners rely on their own regional electric infrastructure, but the broader lesson remains the same: depending entirely on electricity delivered through the grid leaves you exposed to problems beyond your control.
What Does Energy Security Mean for Your Home or Business?
Energy security means having reliable access to the energy you need, even when your usual source of electricity is disrupted or becomes more expensive.
For homeowners, that might mean keeping the refrigerator running, maintaining internet access, powering essential medical equipment, or keeping lights on during an outage.
For businesses, reliable electricity can be even more critical. An interruption could mean lost sales, interrupted production, spoiled inventory, or employees unable to work.
Solar panels and battery storage can help address these concerns while also providing opportunities to lower electricity costs.
How Solar Panels and Batteries Work Together

Solar panels generate electricity from sunlight, helping reduce the amount of power you need to purchase from your utility. But solar panels alone generally do not provide backup power during a grid outage. Most standard grid-connected solar systems automatically shut down when the grid goes down to protect utility workers and equipment.
That is where battery storage comes in.
A properly designed solar and battery system can provide three important benefits.
1. Generate your own electricity
During daylight hours, your solar panels produce electricity that your home or business can use. Depending on your system’s production and your energy use, you may significantly reduce the amount of electricity you purchase from your utility.
2. Store electricity for later
A battery stores available energy so you can use it when your solar panels are not producing enough electricity, such as in the evening. Depending on your utility’s rate structure and system settings, a battery may also help you use more of your own solar energy instead of purchasing electricity during expensive peak-rate periods.
3. Keep essential equipment running during an outage
When paired with compatible backup equipment, a battery can supply electricity to selected circuits or, with an appropriately designed system, a larger portion of your home or business. Solar panels may recharge the battery during daylight hours, potentially extending how long backup power is available.
The amount of power you have depends on battery capacity, solar production, weather, and how much electricity you use. No system can guarantee uninterrupted power under every condition, but the right combination can provide an important layer of protection.
Energy Security Is About More Than Blackouts
Backup power is a major benefit, but energy security also includes managing your electricity costs and reducing your exposure to changes in utility rates.
Electricity prices can change over time, and some utility rate plans charge more for electricity used during certain hours. Generating your own electricity can reduce your exposure to those costs. Adding a battery can give you more flexibility over when you use stored energy.
For businesses with substantial electricity needs, solar and storage may also help manage peak demand charges, depending on the utility rate structure and how the system is designed.
Solar and batteries will not eliminate every electric bill, and savings depend on the property’s energy use, utility rates, system cost, and available incentives. However, they can give property owners more control over how and when they use electricity.

The best system starts with understanding your specific needs.
A homeowner who primarily wants to lower monthly bills may benefit from solar alone. Someone who wants to keep essential appliances running during an outage may want to consider adding a battery. A rural property with frequent outages or a business that cannot afford extended downtime may have different backup requirements.
Before investing, consider a few important questions:
- What do you need to power? Identify the appliances, equipment, or business operations that matter most during an outage.
- How long do you need backup power? Running a refrigerator, lights, and internet equipment requires less energy than powering an entire home or commercial facility.
- How much electricity do you use? Your usage patterns help determine the appropriate size of your solar array and battery.
- Can your system recharge during an extended outage? Solar production, seasonal daylight, and weather all affect your ability to replenish stored energy.
- How can you get the best financial return? Your utility rate plan, installation costs, and available incentives all influence the economics.
A qualified installer can evaluate these factors and help you choose a system that fits your budget and priorities.
