Over the last few weeks, we’ve had a huge influx of people calling and emailing Good Energy Solutions. Many of them have considered going solar for the first time, adding a battery to their home or expanding their current solar installation.

Our Office Manager, Ciara, always asks them what motivated their purchase. The answer has been consistent: they want to go solar before the incoming administration potentially makes any cuts to the current solar incentives.

This leads to a question a lot of people have been asking:

Will the incoming federal administration cut your solar incentives?

The real answer is that no one knows.  It’s a time of uncertainty for renewable energy incentives, including the Inflation Reduction Act. There are several reasons to go solar or to add a battery to your current system, including cost savings on your utility bills and increasing your energy security during times of emergency. The current federal incentives make it financially possible for many property owners to achieve their energy goals.

Amid all of the possible changes to solar incentives with the incoming administration, we know one thing for certain…

Now is the SAFEST time to secure your incentives before anything changes.

While it’s entirely possible that federal incentive programs like the 30% solar tax credit or the REAP grant are at risk in the future, they are here now to help make going solar a reality.

Lawrence Residential SolarConsider these factors

  • The incentives are at risk.
  • Energy prices are going up again.
  • Solar and storage protect you from inflation and create independence.

A Brief History of the IRA

During the previous administration, the IRA (Inflation Reduction Act) set aside $891 billion dollars in part to help you pay for household improvements like installing heat pumps, buying an electric car and installing solar panels.

While many members of the incoming administration have vowed to kill programs that incentivize clean energy projects and delay climate action, we hope the IRA law will remain in place and continue to provide a 30% tax credit towards the purchase of solar panels and battery backup systems. Here are a few reasons why…

The law has bipartisan buy-in. The IRA has contributed over $220 billion in manufacturing investment alone since its inception. Much of that money has been concentrated in traditionally red states.

The IRA has led to a rise in manufacturing.

As more incentives for US-manufactured materials have been introduced, so has the building of solar panel plants, EV factories and hubs for green energy innovation. This creates jobs and contributes to the local economy. In the Kansas City area alone, we’ll soon see the opening of a Panasonic battery plant and a new factory line to produce Chevrolet electric vehicles.

Demand for energy continues to grow.

Lawrence Maxeon SolarJosh Rhodes, a research scientist at UT Austin says, “One of the things that I am pretty certain about making a forecast for is we’re going to use more electricity, not less. And renewables are generally the cheapest form of new electricity to build.”

Energy Prices are Going Up

Perhaps the biggest part of the solar affordability puzzle has to do with the cost of energy. We expect to see a rise in energy rates in the coming months. Local utility companies have already begun to roll out new pricing structures to increase the cost of your electricity during peak hours of demand. This trend will continue as the need for energy grows and your electricity bill increases.

Solar has always helped offset rising energy costs. As electricity rates continue to rise, the time it takes to see a return on your investment decreases. Or, if you plan to take out a loan to pay for your solar installation, you can expect the same payment every month, often lower than your previous utility bills. In a way, solar locks in the rate you pay for electricity, even as energy costs climb over time.
