A Brief History of the IRA

During the previous administration, the IRA (Inflation Reduction Act) set aside $891 billion dollars in part to help you pay for household improvements like installing heat pumps, buying an electric car and installing solar panels.

While many members of the incoming administration have vowed to kill programs that incentivize clean energy projects and delay climate action, we hope the IRA law will remain in place and continue to provide a 30% tax credit towards the purchase of solar panels and battery backup systems. The law has bipartisan buy-in. The IRA has contributed over $220 billion in manufacturing investment alone since its inception. Much of that money has been concentrated in traditionally red states.

The IRA has led to a rise in manufacturing.

As more incentives for US-manufactured materials have been introduced, so has the building of solar panel plants, EV factories and hubs for green energy innovation. This creates jobs and contributes to the local economy. In the Kansas City area alone, we’ll soon see the opening of a Panasonic battery plant and a new factory line to produce Chevrolet electric vehicles.

Demand for energy continues to grow.

Josh Rhodes, a research scientist at UT Austin says, “One of the things that I am pretty certain about making a forecast for is we’re going to use more electricity, not less. And renewables are generally the cheapest form of new electricity to build.”

Energy Prices are Going Up

Perhaps the biggest part of the solar affordability puzzle has to do with the cost of energy. We expect to see a rise in energy rates in the coming months. Local utility companies have already begun to roll out new pricing structures to increase the cost of your electricity during peak hours of demand. This trend will continue as the need for energy grows and your electricity bill increases.
