Kansas City Commercial Solar Project Details
The Kansas City Current partnered with Good Energy Solutions to promote sustainability and install new solar panels at the team’s new home, CPKC Stadium. This partnership sets the Current up as one of the leaders of solar adoption for sports stadiums in North America. The KC Current and Good Energy Solutions have chosen to use REC solar modules for this installation.
This commercial array features 180 REC Alpha Pure-R solar modules installed on the roof of the team store and atop a custom built pergola that shades the primary entry gates of the stadium. This design will take in as much sun as possible, making the system highly efficient. These panels are resilient against snow, wind, hail and fire. CPKC Stadium was able to take advantage of a 30% federal tax credit to help pay for the project.
Last year, more than 40.6 million fans attended events at solar-powered stadiums. The Current and Good Energy Solutions aim to encourage that trend in Kansas City at CPKC Stadium. According to a recent study by Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), power-generated each year by the National Women’s Soccer League facilities is enough energy to charge 150 million smartphones. This partnership is a big step as the club invests in sustainability, allowing the facility to rely more on renewable energy and reducing emissions.
CPKC Stadium is targeting a LEED Gold Certification, which would make it one of only a few stadiums to reach this achievement. Not only does the new solar installation promote sustainability, but it will also save the stadium tens of thousands of dollars every year on its electricity bills.
Having solar panels and partnering with Good Energy Solutions and REC to make this possible and put those 180 panels on the top of Helzberg Diamonds Main Gate, it means a lot to us… Not only do we want to change the world for the better in women’s sports, but we also want to change the world for the better when it comes to sustainability.
UPDATE 11-08-24: CPKC Stadium has gained Gold LEED certification. Now, 14% of the stadium’s total energy consumption is generated from on-site solar panels which avoids the burning of 38 tons of coal annually.
