When you request a residential solar quote, you might notice that our proposals at Good Energy Solutions look a little different from what you’ve seen elsewhere. That’s because we do things differently—especially when it comes to how we calculate the size of your solar system.

Many solar companies will aim to offset 100% or more of your electricity usage, which at first glance seems like a smart move. But here’s why a 100% offset isn’t always the most efficient or cost-effective option—and why we often recommend an offset between 75% and 80% instead.

What Is a 100% Solar Offset?

A 100% offset means your solar panel system is designed to generate as much electricity as you consume in a year. For example, if your household uses 15,000 kWh per year, a 100% offset system would be built to produce 15,000 kWh annually.

Sounds perfect, right? Not so fast.

Why 100% Offset Might Not Be Ideal

The reality is that every home and utility company is different. Your local utility determines the value of any excess energy your system sends back to the grid. And here’s the catch:

  • Some utilities don’t pay you full retail rates for excess energy.

  • Others may limit how much surplus energy they’ll credit.

  • In some cases, your excess energy could be worth significantly less, reducing the overall return on your investment.

So if you’re producing more electricity than you actually use, you might just be donating that extra power to the utility company without seeing the financial benefit.

Why We Recommend 75–80% Offset for Solar

At Good Energy Solutions, we take a custom approach to designing every solar energy system. We’ve been installing solar since 2007, and over the years, we’ve learned that most customers benefit most from a system that offsets 75% to 80% of their annual electricity usage.

Here’s why:

  • Maximizes long-term savings
  • Avoids overspending on unnecessary panels
  • Keeps upfront costs manageable
  • Shortens your solar payback period
  • Reduces excess energy sent back at low rates

Our team conducts a comprehensive evaluation of your energy usage, looking at both your current consumption and expected future needs. This ensures your solar system is perfectly sized for you, not just based on general estimates.

When a Higher Offset Might Make Sense

There are exceptions. If you’re considering adding battery storage for backup power or to navigate changes in utility rate structures, a larger system could be the smarter choice. In these cases, capturing and storing excess energy makes more sense than sending it back to the grid.

Our expert solar consultants will help you choose the best path forward based on your personal goals, whether that’s the best financial return for your investment or finding the best option for energy independence and security.
